Meals That Matter - Shirley Boys' High School & Avonside Girls' High School

World Vision 40 Hour Challenge

Meals That Matter - See challenge description below!

Meals That Matter: 40 Hours. 500 Meals. One Goal.

We’ve already raised a huge amount — but we’re still aiming for our $8,000 goal. Every donation helps make a difference.

From June 13–15, Shirley Boys’ High School and Avonside Girls’ High School teamed up for our most ambitious World Vision 40 Hour Challenge yet. While our wider school communities completed their own personal challenges, our student leadership teams cooked and froze 500 nutritious meals in just 40 hours for people experiencing food insecurity right here in Christchurch.

Together, we were a team of 12 student leaders:

From Shirley Boys’ High School – Head Boy Joel Barrie, Associate Head Boys Daniel Tucker and Tyson Witana, and House Captains Mikaere Walker, Ben Cutler, Lincoln Jones, and Jacob Woodrow.
From Avonside Girls’ High School – Head Students Zoe Croot and Fe’ofa’aki Osai, Deputy Head Students Emma Yule and Trinity Akurangi, and Head of the Pasifika Council Merita Maka.

Over 40 hours, we prepared three nutritious meals – Chicken Tikka Masala, Vegan Tikka Masala, and Cottage Pie – using the shared school kitchens. The meals were distributed with the help of Kairos Food Rescue to vulnerable families and individuals across Christchurch.

We were proud to be supported by FreshChoice Sumner, our major sponsor whose generous contribution made a huge part of this project possible. We also appreciated the support from PAK’nSAVE Wainoni, who helped us with a portion of the ingredients.

We took on this challenge because food insecurity affects people both in Aotearoa and across the globe – including the Solomon Islands, where stories like Polyn’s (a young girl whose family must choose between food and school) remind us just how urgent the need is.

Our challenge wasn’t just about cooking. It was about community, action, and compassion.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

Thank you to our Sponsors
