World Vision 40 Hour Challenge

Offline for a short time, impact for a lifetime! I will be spending the offline time to learn a new language, which will be NZSL.

This year I'm learning 40 words in sign language as a tribute to our official NZ language, NZSL! It is amazing to be able to spread awareness of NZSL and strengthen the use of sign language within our communities.


I'm raising funds so families in Solomon Islands can get the seeds, tools and skills they need to grow crops to feed their children in a changing climate.
 
This kaupapa matters because in the Pacific region, 1 in 6 kids are living in severe food poverty. Together, rangatahi in Aotearoa can help change that.

I spent an additional two hours going over basic NZSL vocabulary and jotting them down on my notebook in my spare time as I went offline for 40 hours. It was a memorable experience and good learning opportunity for me to practice NZSL independently, building up my familiarity with the language to hopefully be able to demonstrate to others in the future.

After learning these words and testing myself together with the previous set of vocabulary, I have memorised and been able to spell a total of 18 words with NZSL

I have spent an additional 1 hour practising and memorising previously compiled words in NZSL. This includes basic vocabulary such as emotions and sections of the day. I found this inspiring as I can test myself independently and be able to retain information on how the hand gestures work, and how each word is construed.

The first day spent offline, I spent 1 and a half hours learning the NZSL alphabet and memorising each letter through hand gestures. At first, it seemed foreign, but overtime I became more fluent at expressing words with hand motion. I recognised that using hand signals can be just as effortless as speaking if done the right way, which encouraged me to commit to my NZSL learning. It was also a massive learning opportunity to experience a different communication and integrate it into my daily life. I also downloaded the NZSL dictionary app for further self study and practice in my spare time. This helped me with scheduling my daily practice sessions for further sign language learning. I will self-study and practice the basics in my spare time over the following weeks
