World Vision 40 Hour Challenge

40 Hour Extreme Winter Survival

For our 40 Hour Challenge, we’re plunging headfirst into the unforgiving wilds of the Coromandel in the dead of winter, completely off-track, completely out of sight. For 40 brutal hours, we’ll rely solely on our own skills—catching our own food and cooking it over a campfire we build ourselves. We’ll construct shelter from the raw forest around us, with nothing but sticks and ferns to protect us from the cold that can drop below 5°C at night.

Every moment will test us. One mistake means hunger, exposure, and exhaustion. This is no easy challenge—it’s a fight for survival, echoing the harsh realities faced by children in the Pacific, where 1 in 6 live with severe food poverty. Families there endure the devastation of rising tides wiping out their crops, leaving them vulnerable and hungry.

We’re taking on this extreme challenge to raise funds to help these families grow climate-smart crops and plant mangroves, securing food and hope for their children’s future.

Thank you to everyone who donated. We had to change our original plan from where we were going to hike so this made the challenge just the little bit harder as we had no idea where we were going. However after crossing a couple streamers and descending down basically a cliff we made it to a site we thought was suitable. From them we spent 6 hours gathering resources and building our shelter and campfire, we cooked bread on sticks and struggled to keep the fire going in the rain. In the end, we all survived!

The Plan

Wednesday 11th Jun
We are planning to start our 40 hours when we leave from hamilton at 4am Friday Morning. Then it is a roughly 2 hour drive to our drop off point from where we will hike about 3 hours to our campsite. This hiking time may differ, as we looked at the campsite on a map, so we might find a better spot in person. Then we will have to forage for many hours to gether enough wood to build a campfire and build a shelter. This will bring us to around 3pm, then the plan is to try and fish at a closeby river. We will cook food over the fire and then stay warm, as we don't want to risk hypothermia. Then it will be a long cold night for us. Our 40 hours finish at 8pm on the Saturday.
